We celebrated May as only at Cyclades know. May for the Islands is the month that the islanders welcome the most beautiful days of the year as well as the tourism.
A gorgeous destination near Attica only 2 hours by boat from the port of Lavrio. (About 18 euros pr person and 40 for the vehicle). With daily routes is easily a favorite destination even for a two days dash. We had the opportunity to enjoy the island in the first days of May and meet John who welcomed us in the best way on the island and gave us the best tips to enjoy and get to know this beautiful place and you of course, in your turn, through our little guide.
We celebrated May as only at Cyclades know. May for the Islands is the month that the islanders welcome the most beautiful days of the year as well as the tourism. The harsh days of winter are leaving and colorful days are upon, smells, light and romance. The flowers bloom, the sky becomes blue and the most beautiful time of the year is now a fact. This celebration in Kythnos takes place each year with singing, dancing, and many flowers.
A village and harbour in the northern part of the island. Known for its hot springs that flow into the sea and spas, Baths built by King Otto to relax on his vacation. Unfortunately, local the spas were not open when we were there, but we enjoyed an evening swim, on the beach on the right side of the village where a stream meets with the sea with water temperature exceeding 50 degrees. The residents have created a natural pool at that point with stones to imprison the hot water for a delightful small relaxation. Ideal for nice evenings by the sea. At Loutra you will also enjoy good food locally produced ingredients and beautiful recipes and of course fresh fish. At the Sofrato restaurant, you will taste very nice homemade tsipouro with Tidbits such as Gouna, smoked mackerel, and chickpea soup, recipe tastes like mama’s food and fabulous Kritharoto, as well, all part of the creative Mediterranean cuisine. At Cavo d’oro you will enjoy the more classic cuisine, both restaurants with tables to relax on the beach. Favorite village of skafadwn but also ours since from our room and balcony we had a magnificent view, stunning Sunrise and the sound of the sea. What’s better than to enjoy your morning coffee with your breakfast or your dinner by the sea?
Built on the flatter part of the island to allow residents to take advantage of the surrounding fields and to cultivate with the distinctive oblong face, ideal for beautiful evening walks. Many options for nice food, coffee or drink and of course wonderful ice cream in Gelato, handmade ice cream. Don’t miss out! you should also, find the place where the residents are painting the walls of their homes, a beautiful corner of the capital with artistic character. Keep an eye also for the paintings all along the way which gives a different character to your ride. You will also find yourself here if you are seeking more op night activity and will enjoy a rum (Diplomatico) cocktail at bar Gazoza.
One of the most beautiful villages in the Cyclades. Built to the southern part of the island with Agiou temple located in the center. In the middle and starting from the church the streets up to the theater start. Streets with the typical white color of Cyclades, whitewashed and filled with flowers and blue windows. Here you will find the village’s traditional cafe just beside the church where you can rest for coffee and many dining options in the small taverns.
In the southern part of the island, a small Cape known for Church Panagia Kanala with the image of the Church’s history and the unique green waters of the around beaches to attract many people to enjoy this beautiful place. Almost 14 kilometers from the town and beautiful view to Serifos, only 20 minutes away by car. Here you will enjoy great breakfasts at the cafe near the church viewing the unique colors of the sea and wonderful sunsets.
I think Kythnos has the most beaches than any other island of the Cyclades. Thanks to the lace – shape is filled with small bays, most of these accessible either by path or by road. Most beaches are not organized (better!) so take with you definitely water and thermiotiki pie for intermediate cravings.
The most famous beach and the island’s trademark I Kolona with the special natural shape and the long sandy beach that connects a small piece of land with the rest of the island. The sandy beach offers 2 beaches on the right and left side.
Also some of the most beautiful beaches on the island, at the eastern part are Zogaki, Lefkes, Agios Stefanos and Naousa. The Episkopi on the West, a quiet beach with tamarisk will keep you cool after the hike to the castle of Oria. North and West with difficult access to the beach of Agios Sostis, the second perhaps more beloved island’s beach. Local residences’ favourite beach and usually calm are Potamia and Mikra Potamia, also northwest.
In the South the Gaidoyromantra where you leave the car and continue on foot for 20 minutes by walking. From the most beautiful but it’s very difficult and rough road, the Skilos beach also in the South of the island. Moreover, on the south Adonydes Beach at the left side of Kanala and the Ammoydakia, a small beach, between the Church of Kanala and a long beach to the right. Finally, on the west north you may find the Beach at Flambouria. All beautiful with crystal clear waters.
I’m sure though that whenever you may dive you will enjoy the waters of Kythnos and relax thanks to the calm energy of the island.
Accommodation | Porto Klaras Studios
We chose to stay at the Loutra and Porto Klaras Studios and we were rewarded in the best way. If something could stand out on a destination, or if we prioritized what made it special, the first thing would be hospitality. Unique hospitality on this magnificent island was offered by mr. Makis and his son John in the rooms that are kept in the Loutra. They welcomed us and hosted us in the best way, making us feel friends. The rooms of the apartments are spotlessly clean, with excellent views of the beautiful harbor and with a beautiful aesthetic decoration. The best place to stay and relax in Kythnos.
You must try Sfouggato, cheese balls with the traditional cheese of Kythnos. You must also go for breakfast or intermediate Thermal pies. Thermal pie with traditional cheese and special taste and Kolopia, spinach pie without cheese with characteristic dough. Do not forget to try and take home few pies!! Honey, one of the best in the world with fairly light color. For food you need to go at the tavern “Katerina” in Loutra Skinari, at the Sofrano restaurant for Kritharoto, tidbits on raki and creative Mediterranean cuisine in the restaurant “Arias Gefsis” at Ayia Irini, the cafe “I Platia” in the Kanala for delicious homemade breakfasts in the “Steki of Ntetzi” in the island’s capital and in Gelato (also in the capital) for handmade ice cream. The prices are more or less at the same level throughout the island reasonably with a range of 15-20 euros per person with wine.
the Sunrise in Loutra and the relaxing evenings in the warm waters overlooking the full moon. The crystal clear waters and the unique scenery of Kolona. The thermal cheese pie (thermiotiki and kolopia)with its excellent flavor. The hospitality of mr. Makis and John in Porto Klaras studios with the unique view of the room to the harbor. Ice-cream rides from Gelato to the country and coffee in the cafeteria of Dryopida. The architecture of the island and the deserts. Each plot is protected and bounded by dry stone. The view from the Castle of Oria (one of the most beautiful trails for hiking enthusiast with 40 minutes walking and a unique view from the Chapel to the West) and generally all the paths of the island with a unique view of the Aegean Sea. The energy of the island, here you relax with your foot and you are only 3 hours away from Athens. The distances and the opportunity to be there soon from mainland Greece and Lavrio. The May Day feast and romance to warm May with the flowers. The small beach in Kanala, almost private, the beaches of the island, each one of them special. Kythnos!
